Hello, Small-Business Owner,
Each person who starts a business has a unique story to tell. Often, a new entrepreneur can point to a person or circumstance that influenced his or her decision to follow a specific path in life. I am no different, and this is my story.
My mother and I sat across from a CPA at her home office. My father had recently lost his job, and my parents were trying to determine if they should pursue self-employment. There were so many unknowns facing them. How do you start a business? What are the requirements self-employed people must follow? Where do you get the information you need? That CPA gave my parents clear direction on the next step to take.
I believe God works Providentially through circumstances and people. I believe (and clearly experienced) that good things ultimately transpired from my father’s job loss. I remember leaving the CPA’s office and thinking, “I want to do what she was able to do; I want to help people with their businesses.”
It was during this same time that I was deciding what to study in college. Amazing timing, wasn’t it? Prior to meeting with the CPA, I had no clue what I should do. I had not even thought about accounting because I did not particularly like it in high school.
Fast forward six months. I was sitting in my very first undergraduate accounting class. The professor said, “You’ll either like accounting, or you’ll not like accounting. There’s generally no middle ground.” Well, I liked it!
I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting from Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wisconsin and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduate school I became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Currently, I am a solo-CPA business owner, seeking to help the small business owner.
This is part of my story. I look forward to learning your story!
Tara
