Letter from The White House

Hopefully you didn't throw out that letter you received from the White House! Truly!

It's actually an official notice. If you dislike our POTUS, you may have tossed the letter in the garbage. Or if you like our POTUS, you may have kept the letter as memorabilia. Or... if you're a "save-everything-type-of-person" when it comes to taxes, you probably saved the letter.

Here are some details about the notice.

  • It will have Notice Number: 1444 printed in the top right corner under the date.

  • It says White House at the top.

  • It is signed by President Trump.

  • See the picture above for an redacted version of the letter.

Why do you need to save it?

  • It confirms your stimulus payment was processed.

  • It will help you claim additional credits, if eligible, when you file your 2020 taxes.

  • It will be used for confirmation and reconciliation purposes when you file your 2020 taxes.

Yes, the IRS is a little slow in letting us know that this needed to be kept. (But we're talking about the IRS, right?) Plus, it doesn't even look like an official tax notice.

What should you do if you already tossed Notice 1444? (I'm really hoping you kept the letter, but here are a few tips if you didn't.)

  • Keep copies of the bank statement that shows the deposited stimulus payment.

  • Keep the paper check (if you did a mobile deposit with a paper check).

  • Keep other documentation that shows the amount you received, deposited, etc.

It's been a wild ride this year! Hold on, everyone!
